There is a common misconception that successful filmmakers emerge from Hollywood families, industry connections, or access to opportunities that most people will never have.

Then there are people like Avery Todd Harrell.

The Louisiana-born writer and director is part of a new generation of storytellers who are creating opportunities instead of waiting for them. His journey from a small town in Louisiana to Los Angeles wasn’t built on family connections or industry shortcuts. It was built on faith, community, persistence, and an unwavering belief that stories still have the power to bring people together.

When Avery joined me for NH Spotlight Tonight, what immediately stood out wasn’t his resume.

It was his perspective.

Because while many creatives spend their careers trying to be discovered, Avery is focused on something much bigger.

Connection.

From Louisiana To Los Angeles

Before he became a writer and director, Avery was simply a kid who fell in love with storytelling.

Raised in Hammond, Louisiana, with family roots stretching into New Orleans, he grew up surrounded by community, tradition, and family experiences that would later become the foundation for much of his work.

His first introduction to performance came through a performing arts school where he spent years participating in annual productions and developing a love for storytelling. At the same time, films like The Karate Kid, The Princess and the Frog, and The Avengers sparked something much larger.

Those movies weren’t just entertainment.

They became possibilities.

Like many young creatives, Avery didn’t initially see filmmaking as a realistic career path. In fact, he once dreamed of becoming a paleontologist before eventually realizing that the stories he loved watching might become the stories he would someday create.

That realization eventually led him to Howard University, where his filmmaking journey truly began taking shape.

The Usual And The Power Of Shared Stories

One of Avery’s most recent accomplishments came through Coca-Cola’s Refreshing Films Program, where his commercial The Usual became a finalist and introduced audiences to a heartfelt story about community and moviegoing.

The spot celebrates something many of us take for granted.

The movie theater.

Not simply as a building, but as a gathering place.

A place where complete strangers sit together and experience the same emotions, laughter, excitement, and memories.

What makes the project even more meaningful is the inspiration behind it.

“My grandparents inspired that one.”

The story was rooted in memories of visiting the movies with his grandparents growing up in Louisiana. The local theater wasn’t just a place to watch films. It was a community landmark and part of a family tradition that helped shape his love for storytelling.

Throughout the commercial, Avery intentionally included details honoring the people who helped shape him. From wardrobe choices inspired by his grandfather to subtle tributes to teachers and mentors who impacted his life, The Usual became more than a commercial.

It became a thank-you letter.

If there was one word that appeared throughout our conversation, it was authenticity.

For Avery, storytelling begins with truth.

Not manufactured moments.

Not trends.

Not algorithms.

Truth.

“The more specific you get with your storytelling, the more general people can relate to it.”

That philosophy guides everything he creates.

Rather than chasing what’s popular, he focuses on experiences that feel real. He believes audiences can immediately recognize honesty in storytelling because they’ve lived their own versions of those emotions.

It’s a mindset that feels increasingly rare in today’s content-driven landscape.

Yet it’s exactly what makes his work resonate.

Whether he’s creating a commercial, a short film, or developing larger projects, Avery approaches storytelling from a deeply personal place. He isn’t trying to guess what people want to feel.

He’s drawing from experiences he’s already lived.

Surviving The Valley

One of the most honest moments of our conversation came when Avery discussed the reality of building a creative career.

Social media often presents filmmaking as a nonstop series of wins.

The reality is much different.

There are victories.

Then there are valleys.

Avery spoke openly about landing major opportunities, including writing campaigns that appeared in Times Square and working with respected industry professionals, only to find himself months later wondering where the next opportunity would come from.

“Every time you hit a mountaintop, there’s a valley underneath.”

It’s a lesson many creatives understand but rarely discuss publicly.

Success is rarely linear.

The challenge isn’t reaching the mountaintop.

The challenge is continuing to walk when you’re in the valley.

For Avery, faith and persistence have become essential tools.

The difficult seasons don’t last forever.

Neither do the great ones.

The key is continuing to move forward.

Building A Future Bigger Than Himself

As our conversation came to a close, Avery shared his dream project, a feature film currently in development called Falls Count Anywhere, and reflected on what he hopes people will think when they see his work years from now.

His answer wasn’t about awards.

It wasn’t about fame.

It wasn’t about red carpets.

It was about possibility.

He wants young people from small towns and overlooked communities to see his journey and understand that their voices matter too.

And perhaps that is what makes Avery Todd Harrell such an exciting filmmaker to watch.

He’s not chasing validation.

He’s creating pathways.

Because for Avery, storytelling isn’t simply about entertainment.

It’s about reminding people that where you come from doesn’t determine where you can go.

And if his journey so far is any indication, he’s only getting started.
