The 2026 American Music Awards felt like a perfect collision of nostalgia, global domination, emotional performances, and pop culture chaos in the best possible way.

And honestly?
The show had me glued from the very beginning.

Hosted by the legendary Queen Latifah, the night immediately carried energy, confidence, and celebration. Thirty-one years into her reign across music, television, and film, Queen Latifah still commands a stage like nobody else. She looked phenomenal, sounded phenomenal, and honestly reminded everybody why she remains one of entertainment’s most respected icons.

But baby… once the performances started?
It was OVER.

BTS Opens the Show and Sends the Arena Into Complete Pandemonium

The night exploded open with BTS reuniting on the AMA stage for the first time in four years, and the reaction inside the arena honestly sounded unreal.

The crowd roaring for them felt almost surreal through the television screen alone.

Every member of BTS means something deeply personal to somebody watching. That’s the power of that group. They have built one of the most emotionally connected fanbases in modern music history, and seeing them back together onstage felt like a true event moment.

And visually? They looked incredible.

The performance was polished, emotional, explosive, and exactly the kind of opening the AMAs needed. By the time they closed their set, the energy inside the building had completely shifted.

Later in the evening, BTS would continue their dominance by taking home Song of the Summer and ultimately Artist of the Year, fully cementing the group’s return as one of the defining moments of the entire ceremony.

Golden HunTRX Delivers the Song of the Year Moment

One of the biggest emotional highlights of the night came when HunTRX won Song of the Year for “Golden.”

And honestly? Completely deserved.

The song has quietly become one of the most emotionally impactful tracks of the year. It’s inspiring, cinematic, vulnerable, and one of those songs that genuinely sticks with people long after it ends. I literally never skip it on my playlist.

Watching them continue sweeping award after award throughout the night felt exciting because it truly feels like audiences are connecting with authenticity again.

“Golden” just feels important.

Nostalgia Took Over the Night

The AMAs also leaned heavily into nostalgia this year, and honestly? It worked.

Seeing The Pussycat Dolls walk onto that stage immediately changed the energy in my house. This was one of the moments I personally had been waiting for all night.

Even with the canceled reunion tour still lingering in fans’ minds, the group reminded everybody exactly why they became global superstars in the first place. Add Busta Rhymes into the mix performing alongside them and suddenly the entire arena felt transported back into peak 2000s pop culture.

And then came the moment that genuinely made me emotional:

Black Eyed Peas reuniting on the AMA stage to receive the Best Nostalgic Song award.

I’m not even going to lie… I cried a little.

Their music defined entire generations of parties, school dances, and memories. Watching them together again felt bigger than just an award show moment. It felt like reconnecting with a piece of pop culture history.

Even New Kids on the Block reminded audiences why they remain one of the most consistent legacy acts in music. There’s something really beautiful about seeing multiple generations of artists celebrated in the same room.

Karol G Continues Her Global Domination

At this point, we are honestly just living in Karol G’s world.

The superstar received the International Artist Award of Excellence, and the entire night constantly circled back to her presence, influence, and dominance in global music.

Karol G has become one of the defining artists of this era, period.

Her ability to cross markets, languages, and audiences while still maintaining authenticity is something a lot of artists strive for but very few truly achieve.

The AMAs clearly understood her impact.

Leon Thomas, SZA, and the Rise of Modern R&B

The R&B categories this year felt especially satisfying.

Watching Leon Thomas win Breakthrough R&B Artist felt long overdue. He has genuinely been grinding for years, and now audiences are finally catching up to the level of artistry he’s been delivering.

He’s helping bring emotional storytelling and musicianship back into mainstream R&B in a really refreshing way.

Then of course there’s SZA, who took home Favorite Female R&B Artist and continues to dominate through vulnerability, honesty, and artistry that resonates deeply with audiences.

And visually?
GloRilla looked absolutely incredible all night long.

Teyana Taylor Completely Stole the Stage

Now let’s talk about the PERFORMANCE of the night.

Because Teyana Taylor absolutely lost her mind on that stage in the best possible way.

This was not just a performance.
This was a full production.

The choreography, the styling, the transitions, the theatricality… it felt like watching pieces of Michael Jackson, Missy Elliott, and Janet Jackson all merged together into one explosive performance experience.

And once Missy Elliott appeared?
Yeah. It was over.

I’m absolutely going back to rewatch that performance again.

Katseye Steps Into Their New Era

All eyes were on KATSEYE following recent lineup changes, and honestly? The girls delivered.

Their performance was highly anticipated, the pressure was high, and they still managed to hold their own while introducing audiences to this next chapter of the group.

Winning New Artist of the Year only confirmed what many fans already knew: this group has serious momentum moving forward.

And yes… I’m excited to see them on tour.

A Strong Ending to a Surprisingly Emotional Night

Other standout moments included:

  • Twenty One Pilots continuing their long-running success with Best Rock/Alternative Artist
  • SOMBR taking home both Best Rock/Alternative Song and Album
  • Teddy Swims delivering one of the strongest vocal performances of the night
  • Maluma representing Latin music beautifully with an energetic performance
  • Sam Barber winning Best Country Artist
  • Darius Rucker receiving the Veterans Voice Award in a heartfelt moment

And finally, the night closed with rock icon Billy Idol receiving the AMA Lifetime Achievement Award, a perfect ending that brought multiple generations of music fans together.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 AMAs felt emotional, chaotic, nostalgic, global, and honestly very needed.

Music feels alive again.

And for one night, it truly felt like every era, every genre, and every generation came together to celebrate that.
